Co-President

Out of all my experiences here at UCLA, AMWA has been the most special to me thus far. I have gotten the opportunity to meet so many ambitious individuals and watch this organization blossom from what it was my first year. Being a first-generation student has been a grueling process within itself, but AMWA’s atmosphere and resources have allowed me to navigate confidently through so many obstacles that my freshman self would have been too afraid to overcome. Outside of this organization, I have also been involved in research, tutoring through the LA program, and volunteering at the hospital! Through these experiences, I have ultimately learned the importance of equity amongst all racial and ethnic groups, especially within the healthcare industry, and I believe everyone should be able to have the resources and support to follow their dreams. “Sin esfuerzo, no hay recompensa.”

Co-President

My name is Tara Mohanroy and I am one of the Co-Presidents of AMWA! I am currently a Senior at UCLA and am doing my best to make the most of my last year at this amazing university. Outside of academics, I love spending time with my friends and doing spontaneous things around Los Angeles. I also LOVE discovering new food places and vibin' to great music! I joined AMWA because I wanted to engage in a health organization that focused on something deeper than just Medicine itself, but specifically women in the health field and the importance of developing strong communities. With this club, I have managed to create some great relationships with the other members whilst learning and receiving guidance on how to tackle my journey to Medical School. I have definitely gained a new perspective on health, primarily women's health, which has helped me identify my special interest. Joining AMWA is definitely one of the highlights of my Undergraduate experience here at UCLA, and as Co-President I hope to continue expanding this organization with all it has to offer.

Vice-President

Sally Tu serves as AMWA's 2019-2020 Vice President and is a 4th year Neuroscience major. Her passions in promoting and advancing women in medicine drove her to join AMWA during her freshman year. Since then, she has gotten the opportunity to volunteer in numerous health advocacy events, foster a safe space for women in health, volunteer at local orphanages in Tijuana to promote women's health, and network with medical students at the David Geffen School of Medicine. She hopes to attend medical school to continue pursuing her passions in medicine and healthcare. Aside from this, Sally enjoys screenwriting, hiking, traveling, photography, brunching, watching films, and any outdoor adventures!

Soriendo con el Corazon
Co-Director

My name is Emma Nguyen and I am from Texas! I am currently completing my second-year at UCLA as a Pre-Human Biology and Society major and am so thrilled I decided to attend UCLA. I joined the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) my first-year because of my unyielding passion for medicine and supporting women. As the Sonriendo con el Corazon Co-Director for AMWA, I coordinate trips to Tijuana, Mexico and plan events that support the outreach program. Being apart of AMWA has been a wholesome and unique experience that I would not have found anywhere else. Other things I love doing outside of school include practicing yoga, playing tennis, being an avid memeber of a health and fitness girl group, and exploring new places in SoCal! With all of that being said, I am so excited for this year’s AMWA and cannot wait to see what’s in store!

Soriendo con el Corazon
Co-Director

My name is Gabriela Soto and I am the Director for Sonriendo con el Corazon. My interests lie in creating equal access to education and healthcare globally. I initially joined AMWA because it was a non competitive environment where women only wanted to uplift and encourage others. AMWA has allowed me to have an impact on children in Tijuana, Mexico and has given me the opportunity to be able to provide resources and build a relationship with these children.

Publicity Director

I'm Tiffany and I'm the Publicity Director for AMWA! I'm a 3rd year Physiological Sciences major and Global Health minor, and I'm interested in pursuing a career in medicine/healthcare. Outside of AMWA, I love dancing, brush lettering, and eating ice cream! I joined AMWA, because I was looking for a supportive community that would help me explore my interests in healthcare as well as provide a way for me to become more involved on campus and in our community. I'm really happy to say that I've learned so much about different healthcare careers, what it's like being a healthcare professional as a woman, and women's health since becoming a member of AMWA!

Social Director

My name is Trina Nguyen and I am AMWA’s 2019-2020 Social Director. I joined AMWA to be a part of an inclusive environment with members who are ambitious, caring, and passionate about healthcare and the advancement of women in medicine. From AMWA, I’ve been able to meet such incredible women as well as give back to my community. As the Social Director, I hope to foster an environment in which members can form and solidify friendships with peers to have a supportive community at UCLA. Outside of AMWA I am also a Department Coordinator for Care Extenders and a member of Habitat for Humanity. I do research regarding Type 1 diabetes with UCLA’s Kaufman laboratory and work on monthly reports for Montpelier Surgery Center based in my hometown - the Bay Area. In my free time, I like to exercise, cook, sing, and play piano (I particularly like watching Food Network while on the elliptical).

Co-Professional Development Director

My name is Alyssa Pelak and I am the Professional Development Co-Director. I joined AMWA because I wanted to be a part of a group of like-minded women. Through this organization, I have gotten information, resources, and connections that have helped my journey as a pre-med immensely. Most importantly, I have gained a network of supportive, passionate, and empowered women. Outside of AMWA, I am a part of the UCLA Sports Medicine Internship Program where I work with physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals to improve and maintain the health of the UCLA baseball team. My interests include nutrition and exercise and in my free time I love to do yoga, travel, cook, and pet dogs whenever possible.

Co-Professional Development Director

My name is Ashley and I am a third-year Biology major from Los Angeles. Along with AMWA, I do research on the editing functions of enzymes activated during mRNA translation, and volunteer at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music (especially alternative rock, punk, and hardcore) and try to go to concerts as often as possible. I joined AMWA when I was a first year because I was drawn to the welcoming and supportive environment that this club offers. Over the years this organization has helped me so much on my path to medical school, through guest speaker events, informational presentations, and mentorship programs. But more than the academic benefits that AMWA offers, I have also gained an amazing network of intelligent women that I am proud to call my friends. As the Co-Professional Development Chair I hope to introduce our general members to the great diversity of careers one can pursue in the health field.

Community Service Director

My name is Fudda Ababseh I am a third year undergraduate student at UCLA majoring in biochemistry. I was born and raised in a small town in California called Pacifica. I love to be involved in my community, practice photography, travel, try new foods, be outdoors, and spend time with family and friends. I am currently a care extender volunteer at Ronald Reagan and involved in two clubs Bruins Fight Pediatric Cancer and American Medical Women Association. This year I am the Community Service Director of AMWA and I am excited to introduce new ways for our club to get involved in our community. I joined AMWA initially because I wanted to learn more about health careers for women and wanted to be around people with the same passion and interests as me. During my time as an AMWA member, I have learned and gained a lot because the club introduced me to a lot of great people, allowed me to network with professionals, and provided me with a lot of information about medical careers and their different paths. I think most of all the best thing I have gotten out of AMWA is sisterhood because I have created an amazing friendship with the other members and we always have an amazing time at meetings and events.

Mentorship Director

I'm Anmol, the mentorship director for the 2019-2020 school year. Joining AMWA has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've had at UCLA. I joined this organization because of its focus on women's path in medicine and it has been really helpful in navigating as a premed. This organization really cares about its members and I've been able to meet a lot of new people. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge of different careers in medicine and how women have navigated through the field in this club which has been extremely valuable. Some of my special interests are going hiking and to the beach because it really shows how beautiful nature is.

I’m addition to AMWA, I am involved in several other clubs on campus, including NUS, CityLab, Mortarboard, and Beauty and Cosmetics. In my free time I enjoy cooking and baking, watching horror movies, and going out with friends. I joined AMWA because I wanted to find a group of women who shared the same goals and ideals as me. This organization has provided me and other premed students with a safe and supportive space to share our thoughts and be able to bond through common experiences and a desire to help each other succeed.

Secretary

Hi! My name is Bansari Amin, but I go by Bansi, and I'm a third year from Downey, CA. I love listening to music as I fall down a wikipedia hole collecting random trivia. I'm also a pun enthusiast, but I'm awful at making them. I joined AMWA last year and was enveloped in a sense of community and guidance, and I hope to foster that as Secretary this year!
